MEAL TIME TIPS

  • Families are more likely to embrace healthy eating if food is prepared in tasty, appetizing and unique ways. A little extra effort in cooking can pay off with healthier eating habits for everyone. trong>
  • Be sure to include foods from at least 3 of the 4 food groups at each meal.
  • Colour combinations are very important to the appetizing appearance of a plate of food. Try to maintain a food’s natural colour, and offer a mixture of colours on the plate.
  • Our flavour goal should be to achieve a balance of sweet, sour, salty, bitter, strong and spicy.
  • Try to have just one strong flavour in the meal.
  • Avoid repeating flavours in the meal.
  • Avoid more than one sweet accompaniment to the main course.
  • Try for contrasting textures in your meals: hard, soft, chewy and crisp.
  • It’s preferable to have only one sauce in any meal.
  • Variations in shape and size of the food served adds visual interest.
  • It’s a good idea to serve foods of varying temperatures, and to make sure that each dish is the right temperature for best flavour.
  • Variety, variety, variety. Even if it’s just making the same thing a different way, changing the cooking method or presentation will keep the family interested.

Need healthy food suggestions for picky kids?

We eat fairly healthy in our family but sometimes I feel like its the same thing over & over since my kids are such picky eaters. Any fun suggestions for kids side items that are healthy, nutricious & delicious?

Just a thought, but pizza. You can add your own toppings and almost anything's good with cheese thrown on top. Ants on a log… you know, celery, peanut butter & raisins… I'm sure there are also sites and books on healthy kid cuisines too.

Do you force your kids to eat healthy food, even if they don't like it?

First of all, you don't force them because then they will hate that food and resent you. Second, you show them how much YOU love those broccoli & stuff. Third, you present the food on an attractive way. Fourth, they don't have to eat all the veggies & stuff to get dessert (if there any): pieces by pieces, spoonful by spoonful, they will learn to like it!

Peas of Mind - Healthy Kids meals

I came across this great idea for getting kids to eat healthy. Peas of Mind Puffets are vegetarian hand-held meals for growing kids. Each Puffet flavor contains ingredients from the healthiest parts of the food pyramid.

Any healthy food ideas for kids 7 years old– to improve energy level?

Lots of pasta for long term energy. Sugars are bad. Protein, like peanut butter, is good for energy too.

My kids eat different food to others in their school - Its now a problem, what do you suggest I do?

My kids eat very healthy food and they prefer that most of the time. The problem is at school they are constantly upset because someone has insulted their dinner for being healthy or foreign. The other day I made them stuffed pittas with salad and olives and chilli sauce and they were ridiculed so much my son starved himself and my daughter cried. My son ate his lunch in the car on the way home. Why is eating differently such a huge problem in this day and age when you can practically buy what ever nations food you want in Tescos? I'm not going to give into their peers and give them crisps and crap but what should I give them that makes their pack up interesting yet healthy and not embarrassing?

I'd just ignore what they say. It'll take some time, but they will eventually tire of teasing them about the food that they eat and will just stop.

Kids will tease other kids no matter what they do or say. If it's not about the food they eat, then it'll be about the clothes they wear, the music they listen to or the house they live in. It's just a part of growing up.

Maybe the other kids are jealous that you care so much to take the time and pack a healthy lunch for your kids while their parents just depend on the school to feed them.

If they still feel self-conscious, you can pack sugar-free puddings and fruit snacks. Juicy Juice is supposed to be 100% juice but a apple or orange slices would be better because they'd get more fiber that way. Whole wheat bread (stay away from anything that says "Enriched"), low fat lunchmeat, cheese and mayo to make a sandwich is good too. They also have the baked variety of Lays and Cheetos but they tend to be a little salty to me.

I hope that this helps and I wish your kids the best in their academic endeavors.

I need some healthy food ideas for my kids to go to daycare with. I work full time so easy foods but healthy?

I'll bet your kids would enjoy fresh fruit with fruit dip. Fruits dips are easy to make, and kids think it's really elegant to have personal cups of dip. Here's a big collection of different fruit dips. There should be something that the kids would like - well - several I'd think.

i am after ideas of good food/healthy to feed my kids. very low if any sugar and fat?

some yummy foods for kids

-yogurt ambrosia,
mix a few marshmellows with low fat strawberry yogurt

-milk shakes
just add low fat milk, yogurt, berries or bananas and honey all in a blender. serve with colourful straws and just a few colourful sprinkles on top.

-homemade pizza
chop up some colourful veges such as cherry tomatoes, capsicum, mushrooms and also cooked skinless chicken breast.
let the kids arrange the toppings on a pita bread base with tomato sauce, sprinkle a little cheese, then bake in the oven.

-fruit kebabs
just chop yummy friuts such as melons, berries, grapes, apples into cubes and put through skewers, if you like you could add just one fruit lolly in the middle to make it extra yummy.

(because they're kids its allrite to use full cream milk or normal fat yoghurt too!!!!)

~hope this helps~ :)
